What each service includes

What happens in the chair.

Hone is three chairs above a kopitiam on Jalan Panggong, run on a book rather than a queue. The standard appointment is forty-five minutes and none of it is rushed. Order a white coffee downstairs and bring it up.

More about the barbers

Word gets around.

  • Rang the bell not sure I had the right door. Three chairs, no queue, no phones going off. Closest thing to a private club I've paid fifty-five ringgit for.

Jason Teoh, Chair One, with Ariff

  • The deposit and the appointment-only rule sounded fussy until I realised it's the reason nobody is ever waiting when I arrive. Worth the RM 20.

Farah Aziz, Chair Two, with Wai Kit

  • Wai Kit still strops his own razor before he starts. I watched him do it twice before I understood it wasn't for show.

Finding the door.

We are on the first floor, above the kopitiam. Our door is the timber one beside it, the one with the small brass plate. Ring the bell at the bottom of the stairs and someone comes down to let you in.

23A Jalan Panggong
Chinatown, 50000 Kuala Lumpur

Street parking is scarce after dark. The REXKL lot on Jalan Sultan is a four-minute walk.
